Sep 09, 2015 · Sep 8, 2015. #5. Tom, do yourself a favor and buy a 1/4" boring bar. You can grind them from HSS and it will work fine but it is a lot of work to make them. The modulus of elasticity of HSS is the same, regardless of shape. Using a 1/4" HSS bit you will probably have an extension capability of 1" max.
Sep 15, 2011 · I am a complete novice at grinding HSS lathe and boring cutter tool bits. I have built a boring bar from 4140 steel with a hole to present the cutting bit at a 60 degree angle. I understand I need to grind more relief to clear the inside of the cylinder, but I am guessing at the actual cutter geometry.

Sometimes you gotta grind one out because that's the only way to get the job done when a small bore is called for.
